Let’s talk base layers. The bread and butter of Mons Royale that started it all, back when good-looking Merino was just a twinkle in our founders' eye. But, you ask, is Merino wool actually better than synthetics for base layers?

Yes, Merino wool outperforms synthetics in almost all the metrics that matter. The short version being that Merino wool base layers regulate temperature, buffer moisture better than polyester, and do it all without smelling like a gym rat by lunch. Synthetics are tougher, cheaper, and might be built like a park bench - but next to skin? That’s where you’ll want Merino. Here’s why.

Merino vs synthetics base layers: the case

To give synthetics their due: they're built tough. Plastics don't degrade easily, so polyester and nylon base layers can handle abrasion and hold up pretty well to hard wear. That's about where the credit ends.

Merino base layers win in terms of performance. That’s because Merino was, quite literally, designed for it. While synthetics were developed in labs, Merino’s been on the backs of mountain sheep since the dawn of time, protecting them through freezing winters, dry summers, wind, rain, and real movement. We just took that natural fibre technology and spun it into a base layer that protects you the same.

Merino vs Synthetics: Moisture management

When it comes to moisture management, Merino wool outperforms polyester in moisture buffering by 96%. That's not luck, that's fibre science. And there's a four-year research study to prove it, led by the North Carolina State University. While polyester moves sweat along the surface, Merino absorbs moisture when your skin heats up and releases it slowly into the atmosphere, before the material feels wet against your skin.

Merino vs Synthetics: Temperature regulation

Moisture management and temperature regulation are actually closely tied. As well as trapping warm air when it’s cold, Merino also releases heat when you’re working hard (moisture management) which leads to temperature regulation. Because it’s an active hygroscopic fibre, it’s constantly adapting as conditions change and as your body temperature swings between movement and rest. It's reactive, keeping your core temperature regulated during both the hot climbs and the cold chairlifts.

While synthetics are alright at keeping you cool when you’re working hard, it’s when you stop that they drop the ball. Synthetic fibres don’t have temperature-regulating properties, so as soon as you stop working, so do they. Your temperature drops a lot quicker when you stop, leading to big spikes between activity and rest and leaving you shivering at the summit. You can read the science on that here.

Merino vs Synthetics: Odour control

One of the first things people notice about Merino is that it’s super slow to stink compared to synthetics. While polyester holds onto odour-causing bacteria and has you smelling like a high school after exercise, Merino’s fibre structure is naturally odour-resistant. It doesn't need chemical treatments to stay fresh, and while eventually it’ll also need a wash, your mountain base layers will last a whole lot longer and smell a whole lot better after a few days of back-to-back wear. Is Merino worth the extra cost vs synthetic?

Merino base layers cost more upfront. The good ones do, anyway, and there's no getting around that. They’re a higher-quality, higher-performing item, which pays for itself when you’re battling the elements. The good news is, because they resist odour, you’re also washing your base layers less and getting more wear out of them. And while our base layers are all Merino-based, we do use a touch of nylon to help with durability and shape, which means they’ll also last longer and hold their form better.

The Merino vs synthetics verdict

Synthetic might be cheaper on day one, and they’ll outlast you in a landfill. But for anyone spending real time in their base layers, whether on the slopes, the skin tracks or the chairlifts, Merino wool simply works harder and performs better. It regulates heat, manages moisture and stays fresh longer. So, if you're after the best base layers for winter, that's not opinion. That's science.
